Vauxhall Motors started making vehicles in the UK in 1903. Today, as the oldest and most familiar of Britain’s automotive manufacturers, its philosophy is to build vehicles that are relevant to all. Vauxhall’s two manufacturing plants in Ellesmere Port and Luton produced 120,000 cars and vans in 2019, and its sales accounted for 7.5 per cent of the UK market. Vauxhall is part of Stellantis NV, a global leader created for the new era of sustainable mobility as a result of the merger between Groupe PSA and FCA Group in January 2021. Vauxhall is a leader in electrification – as of 2021 it is one of the first manufacturers to offer fully electric versions of all its vans. By 2024, all Vauxhall cars and vans will be available with an electrified version. By 2028, Vauxhall has committed to only selling fully electric vehicles.

History

Vauxhall Motors has been manufacturing motor vehicles in the UK continuously since 1903. Vauxhall’s range spans all mainstream sectors of the vehicle market with best-selling model names such as ADAM, Astra, Corsa, Cascada, Meriva, Mokka, VIVA, Zafira and Insignia regularly topping the sales charts. Vauxhall is also the largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles in the UK and its parent company General Motors’ 4th largest global market. The company employs c5000 people in the UK and exports three quarters of its production. It is headquartered in Luton, Bedfordshire where it also manufactures the Vivaro light commercial vehicle. A second plant at Ellesmere Port in Cheshire produces the Astra and Astra Sports Tourer.

Vauxhall is a major UK employer, with around 35,000 people employed directly or indirectly through our company activities. Direct head count amounts to some 4,500 people at our Luton, Ellesmere Port and other locations. 23,000 people work within our Retail Network, and a further 7,000 are employed within our UK supply chain, providing all the millions of parts and many essential services we use every day.

Vauxhall sales amounted to almost 150,000 vehicles in the first half of 2010 alone – an 11.97% market share. The fact that 79% of our production goes to export further underlines our value to the country’s economy.

Our Luton plant, with 1,171 staff, produces 67,000 units a year in two shifts, with the potential for as much as 100,000 units a year in three shifts. The Luton plant has not only produced a van that has won ‘Best Medium Van’ at the Van Fleet Awards no less than seven times, but they have achieved 10.1 million hours worked without a Lost Work Day case.

Our Ellesmere Port manufacturing site has a headcount of 2,122, and a capacity of 187,000 units a year in three shifts. They produce the sixth generation Astra 5-door hatchback, Astravan and, from September 2010, the new Astra Sports Tourer too.

In 1995, Ellesmere Port was the first manufacturing facility in the UK to be registered to ISO 14001. In 2008, it helped Vauxhall become the first UK manufacturer to receive the Energy Efficiency Accreditation Award. And since 2002, the plant has further reduced its energy usage by 54%.
